Benefit for Jose's family last night, oct. 9th....
what an amazing night and community to be a part of. what an incredible group of performers. wat great people run the apollo grille and gave so much of themselves last night. what an amazing rockstar jose is. what a strange, awful world this is that tragedies have to befall those of such great hearts. i guess i'll write more about last night later. i'm a bit tired and overwhelmed.

where are my hushpuppies?
is DC in "dixie"? no? no.
philip and flora will find themselves at IOTA cluba and cafe in arlington, VA (near DC) on the night of july 15th, opening for erin mckeown, who is having her regional CD release party that night.
wow, its the longest day of the year. it feels long already. its only 10 am and it feels like it 9:45.
anyway, philip (ok, MYSELF) will play a solo thing tonight at the Bishops Lounge in downtown Northampton. You know, that town where 99% of the shows i play occur, because its walking distance.
the show starts at 9 pm. also on the Bill: Ben Slater (Spirithouse Records), and Marty Helly. The address: 41 Strong Avenue.
its an intimate place to see a show, depending on the crowd. sometimes its a rock crowd (loud), sometimes its a folk crowd (quiet). who knows what it will be tonight. hopefully the light bulb above the stage will be on tonight. rock.
a short entry about the weekend: we played two shows, as you may know. the taste of amherst was .... well, it was a tough gig. see henning's blog about that one, for any details. i'm not sure we actually played any music that night; i think if you were listening you would just have heard the sound of struggle. (thanks to The River, tho, for promoting the hell out of it). the next night at the elevens, all was redeemed, musically, at least for us.
have a good, long day's journey into night.

doublemint fun.
this weekend is a doubleblast of winterpillian mammalia.
what?
good news: henning will play bass with us for both shows this weekend. we are getting a bit addicted to having a bass player. and i too, am getting used to not telling the sound guy, 'hey can you boost the bass noise and feedback potential of my acoustic guitar because we have no bassist?' whateveh its lovely, lovely.
show 1: taste of amherst. free show. we are on at 6:30. amherst town common. friday night, june 17th.
show 2: benefit for valley free radio, at the elevens, northampton, 9 pm show. with spanish for hitchhiking, mike flood, red skelton. no no no, i mean rob skelton, sorry. however, how cool would it be if red skelton went up and did his vaudeville routine, from very far beyond the grave, as he died in 1997? Clem Kaddiddlehopper, anyone? that would bring in some bucks for the good cause!
see you somewhere.

We have a mommy and a daddy and they love us.
Cutely, the Winterpills have been adopted by local progressive radio station, The River (WRSI, 93.9). this means that for the month of June, they will be playing us and promoting gigs, etc etc. Talking smack about us. Spreading rumours.
It's pretty cool.
Its fun to be on the radio.

Spring is really here. Other things are not really here.
it means a lot to say that up here in New England.
what's going on? thanks for asking. well, the winterpills album we rumoured to have finished but really not quite. we lied. we think the chances are good that by this saturday all the mixing will be complete. but we are likely going to record 2 more tracks to put on the album. its a case of having gone so far, why not go all the way.
don't worry.
aside from that, its been warm. i have been raking up old leaves. i have discovered Podcasting, which is still kind of mysterious to me but i think i basically get it. of course like all blog-like things, and like the internet, and the world at large, there is a lot of crap to wade through before you find anything you actually like. and its probably overrated, this podcasting. but i see the fun in it. homemade radio shows you carry around with you. somebody picked these songs and put them together to show the world. etc etc etc.
what else? ok -- this coming Tuesday, April 12, we will be playing live on Cambridge WMBR. The show is Pipeline! hosted by Jeff Breeze, the time is 9 pm. and Jose has said (hooray!) that he will play bass with us. joy of joys.
also, for our May 6 P.A.C.E. show coming up, Our Lady of Bells will be joining us. new local band that we really enjoyed when we saw them recently.
thats all, now i have to go waste more time. thank you.

All Week Long on XM Radio 50...
yes kids. its an amazing hour-long performance of Philip and Flora that was taped at the super-hi-tech and sleek XM studios in DC in February, and it makes its debut on XM channel 50 on monday, march 28. here is their press release about it:
"XM 50/The Loft presents Loft Session #70 with Philip Price. Former front-guy for The Maggies (now fronting Winterpills), Philip Price celebrates his 2nd solo project with a trip to The Loft and we were psyched to have him! You'll hear songs from Philip's latest CD, Honey In The Chemicals, plus some older material and brilliant covers that perfectly suit his Beatles-meets-Pernice-Brothers élan. Catch it Monday 12 noon & 9pm, Thursday 3pm & 9pm and Saturday 6pm, all times Eastern."
so, do you have XM Radio? No? well, neither do we, but i'm sure SOME of you do. maybe you can all meet at someone's house who has it and have a party. we know they play The Loft at Trader Joe's, and also (in Northampton) the Del Raye restaurant.
though i think you can sign up for a free 3-day trial to stream it over your computer. you could try that.
we are thinking of releasing the session as an album by itself sometime later this year.

we have a show tonight (march 14th) at the elevens.
thanks for all the feedback on the song, folks -- it's unanimous. i will definitely go back and add more cowbell.
in sad music news, martin denny is dead. i have several albums of his and always enjoyed them. thank you, martin.
last night i went to se The Aviator, which was quite excellent. i saw henning ohlenbush and lesa bezo there. in a related note, the music in that film is great -- a very unobtrusive original score, puncuated by a ton of great period music, not to mention cameos by both father and son and daughter wainwrights. loudon was actually really hysterical as a crazy jazz era bandleader.
i don't know what henning and lesa thought of the film. i bet they liked it.
yes, i say 'film'.
pet peeve department: why do people a) go to films and talk throughout the film? these two old ladies were behind us and flora determined after an hour or so of hearing them blather on to each other about every single moment in the film that they actually thought they were IN the film. howard hughes says something potent and striking, and they comment to HIM about it. 'yeah!' they said. or they would talk back to the bad guys in the movie. 'i'm gonna get something on you!' says alan alda. 'no, you won't!' the old lady says. and then howard hughes says a better line.
oh my god. i glared at them several times and they sort of quieted down but i think it was more because they didn't want to disturb the crazy glaring man sitting in front of them (me) than they realized they were telegraphing their stupidity to the world a bit too loudly.
the other peeve i have is this: its the final moment of a film (usually you can feel it). and its a good film so its an intense moment (especially if its scorcese). and you are an idiot, so you sense its the end and you just start packing up and leaving, and talking to your comrade about the movie or what you are doing after the movie. loudly. stupidly. like an idiot. and you henceforth just basically miss the moment at the end of the film and disturb those near you who were hanging on the moment, immersed in it.
i think these people, when they watch movies, really only see about 30% of the movie. their minds go from plot point to plot point, and they miss tons of the other stuff inbetween: like acting, writing, subtle timing, emotion, lighting, etc. they just want to get to the next point, because they are following a story. that's it.
hell, they could pay me $7 and i will come to their house and just read them the plot points. it would take about 15 minutes, i would be $7 richer, they would have had the exact same experience, and i would not have to put up with sitting in a dark theater with them for a couple of hours. a good deal all around, i say.
god. when did i become so bitter?
where's my cowbell?
